The Fundamentals of Caring is a coming-of-age movie on several different levels. Paul Rudd plays Ben, a washed-up writer who has hit rock bottom. He has been”not-ready” to sign his divorce papers for 3 years, from a marriage destroyed by the death of a child. In his attempt to get his life together, Ben takes a care-giving class and becomes the professional caretaker of Trevor.
Trevor is a 18 year old boy with duchenne muscular dystrophy, who just moved to the US with his mother from England. He has been without his father since he was three, he sends him weekly letters even though he walked out on them when Trevor was diagnosed. Trevor who has never been anywhere more than an hour far from and lives a routine, keeps a map of bizarre museums and landmarks around the USA. His favorite been the world’s deepest pit.
Ben and Trevor start off their relationship roughly, with Trevor pulling all sorts of pranks in attempt to scare Ben. After a few rough speed bumps, Ben convinces Trevor’s mother Elsa to let him take Trevor on a road-trip for a week.
Along the trip the two form a bond and find new perspective in life. Trevor gets to experience many firsts, and has his first romantic encounter. While Trevor gets a feel on being a normal teenager, Ben finds himself.
The Fundamentals of Caring is a dark comedy you will enjoy through out. It received 78% review on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 out of 100 on Metacritic.
