Why Lusail Expressway Won An Engineering Award

Lusail Expressway wins prestigious engineering award

The Lusail Expressway recently won the Engineering News Record Award for 2018 Global Best Projecting in the roads/highways category.

The 5.5 kilometer Lusail Expressway connects the capital Doha with emerging Lusail City, and connects to several popular destinations, including The Pearl, Katara and the Diplomatic Area.

From among 23 projects from 12 countries, the panel of industry experts that specializes in road projects evaluation at the Engineering News Record’s 6th annual Global Best Projects competition named the Lusail Expressway winner for its innovation, safety standards and challenges overcome during construction.

The award was presented to the Manager of the Highways Department, Engineer Youssef al-Emadi, at a ceremony in New York City. The award symbolizes excellence, innovation and perfection.

Other competing projects included metros, bridges and tunnels in cities like Hong Kong, London, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Toronto, San Francisco and Washington.

One of the expressway’s prominent features is a 103-meter-high arch, the highest monument in Qatar, which stretches over one of the roads more complex intersections.

“I want to dedicate this achievement to our government, led by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness the Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani and HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani. I also want to thank each of them for their continuous support and directives that led us to win such a reputable global award,” al-Emadi said during his acceptance speech.
