Get to know the Vampire Facial

the vampire facial, or platelet-rich plasma, became popular after reality TV star Kim Kardashian posted post-treatment photo

The Vampire facial has become very popular since people found out that Kim Kardashian got one. But what is it?

Known as the “platelet-rich plasma” (PRP) facial method, the Vampire Facial is a minor cosmetic surgery that promises a more youthful appearance. Although controversial, like many relatively new cosmetics procedures, it became widely debated after Kim Kardashian tried it out on one of the episodes of Kim and Kourtney Take Miami, a Keeping Up with the Kardashians spin-off.

However, the picture doesn’t encourage one to go through with it, and says a lot about how painful it could be.

The procedure is easy and takes about half an hour.

Trained specialists draw blood from the patient’s arm, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma (which contains platelets and growth factors) from the rest of the blood, then reintroduced to the person’s face.

Using small injections, the plasma from the patient’s own skin is injected under their skin to fill out wrinkles and make them look younger.

However, Kim Kardashian later on described her experience in a blog post as “really rough and painful.”

“Before I got the procedure, I just found out that I was pregnant, so I couldn’t use the numbing cream or a pain killer and both are suggested,” she explained.

Although much evidence support the Vampire Facial rejuvenation theory, many specialists believe that it has no real benefit, hence the heated debates.

But don’t let Kim’s blood-stained face scare you, patients are usually given local anesthesia prior to the procedure to elevate the pain.
