Fall means different things to different cultures, but there’s one thing most of the world agree on, it should be celebrated. Check out some of these festivals from around the world, and maybe set up your own similar festival no matter where you are.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest started off as a royal wedding celebration for a Bavarian prince and princess in 1810, but has now grown into an international fall festival. Every year during the month of October, cities all over the world gather for parades, music, dance, food and of course, beer.

Dia de los Muertos

This day is celebrated in Mexico as well as parts of Central and South America every November. During the first two days of the month people honor their dead friends and relatives by visiting their decorated graves. Even though the skulls and dark decorations might give it off as a sad occasion, Dia de los Muertos is a very fun festival with food, costumes and parades.

Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated in China for thousands of years. Every 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Chinese people have celebrated the full moon with incense sticks, mooncakes and family time.

Between late September and early October the people of Korea spend three days reuniting with family. This harvest festival is celebrated with games and songpyeon, a type of rice cakes with a sweet filling. They also take the opportunity to visit the graves of their ancestors to pay respect.

Diwali

Diwali is one of the most colorful festivals you’ll ever see. The Indian festival of lights is celebrated for five days in either October or November, where they light oil lamps and candles around their houses, set off colorful fireworks, design vibrant patterns of sand, and shop for gifts. They also spend it praying to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.
