The V2X Vehicle Communication System Will Be Tested For Qatar Roads

QMIC Qatar v2x system

Starting next year, cars cruising around Qatar’s roads will be connected and communication with each other through V2X.

The Qatar Mobility Innovation Center has announced that they are preparing to launch the V2X vehicle-to-everything communication system for pilot testing in the country by the end of 2017. The first phase of testing will be through a fleet of 30 to 50 vehicles and 20 to 30 roadside units, all equipped with transmitters/receivers.

In an attempt to curb road accidents, the service will allow vehicles to communicate and exchange information on road conditions, like traffic accidents, jams, and other relevant information. The system works by transmitters located on cars, as well as on roadside units.

The V2X, or vehicle-to-everything communication system, is an information sharing infrastructure that passes information from a vehicle to any interested party, like other vehicles, traffic control and monitoring grids, pedestrians, and vice versa.

What makes the V2X extra effective is that is incorporates several other types of vehicle communication systems, like the V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure), V2V (Vehicle-to-vehicle), V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian), V2D (Vehicle-to-device) and V2G (Vehicle-to-grid).

The testing will be done to check the feasibility of making the service public by 2019, but it’s more complicated than that. Even if the system is set up and connected, there will have to be vehicles equipped with the right technology to make use of it. Some of the major car manufacturers that will have cars ready for the V2X are the US-based General Motors and Japan’s Toyota, both have revealed plans of launching such services internationally in their 2017 models. However, Qatar’s traffic is neither limited to these car brands alone, nor is to 2017 models.

However this project rolls out, no one can deny how futuristic and amazing the V2X seems to be.
