A Closer Look At Coldplay

Besides Beyoncé’s new provocative music video, another group artist has made most headlines this month with their Super Bowl performance and new music video with the Queen B herself. We are talking of course about Coldplay.

After being the world’s most famous band for quite some time, we thought Coldplay could not surprise us anymore or come up with something new. But after their latest album release A Head Full Of Dreams, we are glad we were wrong because the songs are different and more uplifting than their previous releases. It feels like a re-birth for the alternative rock band whose songs are usually labeled as dark and meditative.  In contrast, the songs Adventure of a Lifetime and Hymn for the Weekend, featuring Beyoncé, are colorful and more upbeat.

Lyrically, the album is more spiritual than the previous ones and it’s an ode to love as Chris Martin sings in Hymn for the weekend for an angelic presence in his life (Oh, angel sent from up above / You know you make my world light up). He also mentions enjoying moments spent with his significant other. Singing in the chorus ‘drink from me’ repeatedly, Martin describes life as a drink and love as his drug that lifts him up when he is down.

In Adventure of a Lifetime, Martin continues with his celebration of love and being alive. He sings that everything’s possible with his lover by his side: “Everything you want’s a dream away / Under this pressure, under this weight /We are diamonds taking shape”.

We also like the additional poetic touch Coldplay has added in the interlude Kaleidoscope with Barrack Obama being featured singing Amazing Grace and Coleman Barks reciting a poem by Rumi, the great Persian poet and Sufi mystic. Here the human body is compared to a ‘guest house’ where people coming in and go, sometimes staying for a while and other times for a quick check-in. The message conveyed is that life’s events are unpredicted just like an unexpected visitor and we should be grateful because they are sent to us as a guide.

In the end, we hope that Coldplay will continue to make more uplifting music and being an inspiration to us. Also, make sure to watch their latest music videos Hymn for the weekend and Adventure of a Lifetime
