What To Do With Moldy Food

It's not safe to eat moldy food, mold can be toxic and dangerous

While some foods can be eaten moldy, mold can be very dangerous to eat, and cutting it away is not enough.

Let’s say your hungry and head to the kitchen to make a sandwich but find that a part of the bread has turned green/blue and have started to form mold, what do you do? Cut off the moldy part and eat the rest? No!

Some foods, like blue cheese or camembert, are intentionally moldy, in fact, introducing mold to them is part of their creation process. These types of molds are not harmful and can be eaten without a worry.

Mold are types of fungi that grow into multicellular filaments called hyphae, contrary to single-cellular molds that grow into yeasts. It is necessary that you know that mold and bacteria are not the same thing, and while you can spot mold, bacteria can not be seen with the naked eye.

Now here’s why you can’t just cut of the mold and eat the rest of the food. Mold grows somewhat like a tree, and just like a tree, it a big part of it lies hidden underneath the surface. It is easy to see the white fuzz and green/blue/purple part of the fungus that dominates the surface of the infected food, but the bigger part consists of a network of thin, colorless hyphae, that could have spread all over the food’s insides.

Well I’m not a fungus expert, and I take it that neither are you. So neither of us can tell a good mold from a bad one simply by looking at it. It is therefore doctors recommend that you throw away all moldy foods, regardless of the size of the visible part.

On the other hand, many people associate mold with bacteria. Bacteria are in fact single cellular organism that can cause serious health problems. They can not be seen, and most can not be smelled.

Therefore, never eat food that has been sitting out of the fridge for more than a few hours or overnight.

You might have cut moldy parts and eaten unrefrigerated foods before, but it only takes one infection to make you wish you never did, so don’t risk it.

Eat fresh and stay healthy.
