20 Years of Yahoo Messenger Comes To An End

yahoo messenger messaging app is shutting down

You might not have noticed it, but Yahoo Messenger is still operational, and has been since 1998, but not for long.

No one will be missing Yahoo Messenger when it gets shut down on July 17, and it’s mainly because people had forgotten it ever existed.

Without giving a reason, the app, which was purchased by Verizon alongside parent company Yahoo in 2017, will simply cease to exist after being online for two decades.

The messaging app was quite popular in the early 2000s, especially among oil traders for easy to use, free and simply available. When an older version of the app shut down in 2016, oil trading companies issued concern over the app’s future.

Newer instant messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger must have put a lot of pressure on Yahoo Messenger, which was one of the first messaging apps ever created.

Yahoo is already beta testing Squirrel, an invite-only messaging that could replace Yahoo Messenger. However, it hasn’t been as successful as it predecessor, achieving fewer than 5,000 downloads since it release last month.

If you are a Yahoo Messenger user, or have used the app at any point over the last 20 years, your chat history will be available for download here over the next six month.
