World’s First Energy Positive Hotel in Norway

Svart, in Norway, will be the world's first energy positive hotel - Snohetta

Svart, Norway’s first energy positive hotel in the world will produce more energy than it consumes.

Named after the the nearby Svartisen glacier, Svart (black) hotel, at the base of the Almlifjellet mountain in Northern Norway will be the world’s first energy positive hotel. Using 85 percent less energy than any other modern hotel, it will also be producing its own.

The hotel was designed by Snohetta architects, an Oslo-based firm, and was commissioned by the tourism firm Arctic Adventures of Norway.

Visitors of the hotel will have the privilege to enjoy the breathtaking 360 degree view of the surround Northern Norway fjords.

Sitting on V-shaped weather-resistant stilts that reach meters down into the waters below, the design will reduce the hotel’s environmental impact by much.

The energy efficient design was created after extensive research into how the solar radiation in the area could be harvested by Svart.

The end result was positioning areas of the hotel that uses up more power, like restaurants and bars, directly in the line of sunlight.

Other than being built at a specific angle to deflect strong winds, material that can withstand hard weather conditions used by locals for seasonal fishing cabins were used to create the building itself.

Visitors will be able to access the hotel by energy neutral transport shuttles from the nearby city of Bodo.

Svart is expected to be completed by 2021.
