For all we know, Nutella ingredients haven’t changed a lot over last decade or so, but the newest version of the famous hazelnut spread recipe is noticeable to the naked eye.

As it seems, from now on the Nutella spread will have a lighter color, and it has to do with it containing more sugar and milk.

The Hamburg Consumer Protection Center (Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg) revealed that the Ferrero, the company that makes the world’s most popular spread, had secretly changed their recipe.

According to Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg’s Facebook page, Nutella now contains more sugar and more powdered skimmed milk.

Nutella sugar content has now gone up from 55.9% to 56.3% and powdered skimmed milk from 7.5% to 8.7%, per jar.

Even though Ferrero insists that such changes are common in the industry and won’t affect the taste much, the spread has a lighter color now.

Nutella has millions of fans around the world, too many to even estimate, many of which are not happy with this new formula. The hashtag #NutellaGate has flooded Twitter with posts like:

At a time when most companies are trying to promote healthy living by cutting their sugar content, Ferrero chose a different direction. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how the new product goes with consumers.
