According to Health Grove, the annual mortality rate per 100,000 people from breast cancer in the Arab world has increased by 22.6% since 1990. Out of these 100.000, around 4.5 people die from the disease every year.

However, there are survivors among us. Here are five remarkable Arab breast cancer survivors, you might not have known had the disease.

This Lebanese thinker and holistic living advocate was the victim of hereditary breast cancer. However, Mariam refused to receive conventional treatment and chose to heal herself naturally instead. The 81-year- old has now been cancer free for 32 years and enjoys exceptionally good health.

When asked about her struggle, the Palestinian singer and activist said that “cancer occupied my body like Israel occupies Palestine.” She was hailed as an inspiration to Arab women fighting cancer when she posted a photo of her shaved head on Facebook saying “this isn’t a new look or craze, this is to document a new phase in my life.”
