The Panda Power Plant Is Online

The Panda Green Energy power plant in Datong, China

How is China generating clean energy and reducing fossil fuel induced pollution? With a panda power plant of course.

China’s newest power plant is not only harvesting clean energy, but also looks like a giant panda. Solar farms usually have their panels lined up in rows and columns, but China Merchants New Energy Group decided to be extra creative with their Panda Power Plant project.

On June 30, the company announced the completion of the first phase of the power plant, which includes a 248-acre, 50-megawatt plant that looks like cute giant panda in a green field.

What looks like a cute animal from space, just started to provide northwestern China with electricity. With a second panda promised to be delivered before the end of the year, the Panda Power Plant will be able to produce 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of solar energy in 25 years.

This means the country will be saving the environment from the pollution that would’ve been emitted from millions of tons of coals that would’ve been burned had the plant not been built.

According to the company, the plant will reduce carbon emissions by 2.74 million tons.

China Merchants New Energy Group worked closely with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to make the Panda Power Plant a reality.

The UNDP has said that the project is aimed at raising awareness about clean energy among young people in China.
