The Reason Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others

If you thought that the world population of mosquitoes are all part of a campaign against you, you’re both right and wrong.

As it turns out, mosquitoes won’t bite just anyone, they actually have a very selective appetite. Before choosing the perfect lunch, they check for their victim’s blood type, metabolism, and even breath.

Blood Type

After all, mosquitoes bite you to suck protein from your blood. You’re their personal shaker. Study have found that the mini-vampires are particularly attracted to type O blood, which get bitten twice as many times as those with blood type A. Type B, however, fell somewhere in between.

It is easy for mosquitoes to identify a person’s blood type since 85% of the people secrete a chemical through their skin that works as an identifier.

Carbon Dioxide

From as far as 50 meters away, a mosquito can smell your breath and identify how much carbon dioxide you exhale.

That is why larger people usually get bitten more than small children – they exhale more CO2.

Exercise and Metabolism

Yup. Just like they smell your breath, they smell your sweat. By smelling for lactic acid, uric acid, ammonia and other substances found in human sweat, mosquitoes identify the yummiest victim. The more you have the tastier you are.
