Dear White People

Dear White People, Netflix newest release, exposes the struggle of racial minorities inside American universities.

Based on the 2014 movie of the same name, Dear White People is an American satirical television series focused on the lives of black students at an Ivy League university during times of escalating racial tensions.

Sharp-tongued Sam White is media arts student at the fictional Winchester University, an Ivy League college with a predominantly white student body. Sam hosts a radio show over campus radio named Dear White People, where she points out racism and microaggressions. While it is popular with many students, some want it stopped.

When the invitation to a banned black-face part organized by some white students to protest Sam’s radio show is leaked, black students crash the party in a counter-protest, leaving the Winchester community divided.

As for Sam herself, she faces hatred from than just some racist white students when a secret about her love life is revealed.

10-episode season one was release April 28 on Netflix, and almost immediately got a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is satirical and funny whilst exposing some very overlooked microaggressions black students face in America.

The show stars Logan Browning as Samantha White, alongside Brandon P. Bell, DeRon Horton, Antoinette Robertson, John Patrick Amedori, Ashley Blaine Featherson, and Giancarlo Esposito as the narrator. It is written and directed by Justin Simien.

While originally facing some controversy when the first trailer to the show was launched with critics calling it racist, Simien responded by saying that the criticism proved the point of the show.
