Acne has haunted teenagers forever, but its reign of terror might soon be over. It is one of the most common skin conditions, and the most feared by anyone going through puberty.

While experts haven’t been able to pinpoint the cause of acne, scientists at the University of California San Diego have been working hard to find a true solution that would end it once and for all.

pimples actually comes partially by a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. These types of bacteria get a very nourishing environment when dead skin cells stick together and clog up pores.

While killing the bacteria off completely is not an option, since they are good for you in some way, another approach is in the making.

Propionibacterium acnes secretes a toxic protein onto a person’s skin, which is thought to cause the inflammation which subsequently turns into pimples, zits and other forms of irritation. The team believe that they have found an antibody that could possibly kill-off that protein alone and preventing acne from ever developing.

This way, the vaccine would block what is directly causing pimples, zits, blackheads and/or whiteheads, without eradicating the bacteria itself.

The vaccine is still in trial and has been proven effective on skin samples gathered from acne patients. However, scientists will have to test it on actual people before they can put it out on the market.
