Netflix’s newest blockbuster, 13 Reasons Why, explores the life of a teenager bizarrely changed by the suicide of another.

There’s a good chance you might have read or read about the 2007 bestseller Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and if you haven’t, it fine, the series adaptation of the novel is on Netflix. Starting March 31, all 12 episodes, as well as a special, of 13 Reasons Why were released, here’s what you should know about it.

The series was supposed to be a movie starring Selena Gomez to begin with, but it was later announced that it will be made into a series instead, with Gomez serving as executive producer.

The show follows the life of Clay Jensen after one of his classmates, Hannah Baker, commits suicide. While Jensen didn’t have reason to believe that he was in anyway related to Baker’s death, her suicide “note” changed his life forever.

A few days after Hannah took her own life, Clay finds a package containing seven tapes on his doorstep. The seven tapes were recorded by Hannah, explaining to Clay 13 reasons why she took her own life, an apparently, Clay is one of them.

Intrigued to find out how he is one of the reasons, Clay must listen to all of the tapes, learning dark and disturbing secrets about Hannah and other classmates along the way. Clay never asked for this, and he was never ready for it.
