We all have that one show that we keep watching for no apparent reason. You know. The one you don’t completely get, but still do. Well this is the kind of show Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is.
It is hard to explain, but for some reason the show is highly entertaining and you keep on holding on for more, even though you highly doubt you’ll get it. The first couple of episodes will have you speculating, but you’ll have to be a genius to figure out what is going to happen next, or even how things are connected. Are they connected? You’ll have to find out for yourself.
The series picks up when Todd, played by Elijah Wood, is fired from his job at a hotel just after a violent murder takes place. But that is not near being the strangest thing to happen to him that week. Out of nowhere, “holistic detective” Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) comes into his life, and offers him a job as his assistant. More like forces him, but for some reason Todd tags along. But then again, who wouldn’t?
I credit myself on being able to predict plots and storylines, but this one beats me (at least the first 6 episodes). It is a Dr. Who mixed with a bit of Pulp Fiction, and a lot of illogically logical blood, violence, paranormal activity and plain weirdness. But all that together has made this show addictive.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a collaboration between BBC America and Netflix, with the latter streaming the complete first season to its users outside of the US since December 11, 2016.
It has a 8.4/10 rating on IMDB, and a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and we’re pretty sure it will gather a pretty enthusiastic cult following soon.
