The Museo Atlantico off the coast of Lanzarote, lies some 14 meters under water. The only way to reach it is by diving.

Museo AtlanticoAfter three years in the making, Museo Atlantico, Europe’s first underwater museum is now open with 12 unique installations and more than 300 life-size statues submerged between 12 to 24 meters off the coast of Lanzarote, in the Atlantic Ocean.

The museum officially opened on January 10, and includes the works of the British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. It was conceived as a place to promote education about the island’s marine and natural environment, as well as to promote its protection and preservation, according to the their website.

They also made it clear that all the sculptures are made from pH neutral cements, and will eventually support the development and nourishment of the marine biomass.

Even if you find your way to the Canary Islands, the only way to actually visit the museum would be by diving. Covering a 2,5000-square-meter just off the coast, tourists can enjoy the underwater exhibitions for the fair rates of 12,00 € for an adult scuba diver, and 8,00 € for an adult snorkeler.

And if you end up there, keep in mind that 2% of the profits made by the Museo Atlantico will go to the protection, dissemination and research of projects related to the marine life in the waters of both Lanzarote and the other Canary Islands.
