Changes to the iconic Toblerone chocolate causes social media outrage.

New Toblerone barThousands of “loyal” fans have expressed outrage and disappointment over the changes made to the iconic Toblerone chocolate bar. The distinctive triangular chocolate bar is famous to its resemblance to alpine summits. But when the manufacturer was put in front of two choices, to either change the shape of the bar or raise its price, they went with the former.

The new chocolate bars also come in the shape of peaks and valleys, however, the peaks are thinner and the valleys wider after the transformation. The manufacturers, US-based Mondelez International, said that they changed the design to reduce the weight of bars, which were previously 400 gram bar to 360 grams, and the 200 gram bar to 170 grams.

The decision sparked outrage on various social media platforms, with fans and loyal customers saying that the move was the wrong decision. In a statement on Toblerone’s Facebook page, they clarified that due to higher cost of ingredients they were left with the two choices mentioned above, changing the look of the bars or raising the price.shutterstock_226335811

The famous Toblerone chocolate bar was created by Theodor Tobler in Bern, Switzerland, in 1908. Him and his cousin Emil Baumann had developed a unique milk chocolate that included nougat, almonds and honey, and made them with a distinctive triangular shape.

The triangular shape represents the shape of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, and the image of a bear that is hidden in the Matterhorn high mountain symbolizes the town the chocolate originates from.
