BBC’s award-winning Planet Earth is returning after 10 years to fascinate us again.
BBC has just confirmed Planet Earth 2, the sequel to the award-winning documentary series that aired in 2006. While the highly anticipated show was originally scheduled to air sometime in 2016, BBC just confirmed that it will be broadcasted on BBC America on January 28, 2017.
Planet Earth was produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, collecting footage over the span of 5 years. It was the most expensive nature documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC, as well as the first to be filmed in high definition. Consisting of eleven fifty-minute episodes, the show features a global overview of different habitats on Earth.
The network has already released a trailer for the sequel, from which we can tell that the upcoming episodes might focus on various lifeforms on the planet, like animals, mushrooms and microscopic organisms. The fact that the first installment was shot in high definition, which was something relatively advanced back then, helped it gain the popularity it did. However, the new installment was filmed in 4K (ultra-high definition) with the help advanced drones and a whole bunch of next-gen remote recording equipment, making it one of the most technologically advanced nature documentaries ever made.
The show has been in the making for past three years with footage being collected from all over the planet, even in some of its most rigid, extreme and remote locations.
