Sweden To Help Improve Qatar Road Safety

New Qatar road safety measures will be adopted from Swedish models with help from SweRoad.

Traffic accident fatalities is a serious problem that the government of Qatar has been trying to tackle for a long time. In a bid to improve Qatar road safety measures to the fullest, the government turned to the country with the safest roads in the world, Sweden.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Interior signed a deal with the Swedish firm SweRoad, to advice the country on improvements in driver education, traffic congestion strategies and police enforcement.

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding, two experts from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, VTI, will assist in the venture and will study Qatar’s traffic accident and fatalities data, among other things, for assessment.

SweRoad is a road consultancy firm owned by the Swedish government and advises authorities around the world on the Zero Vision model of road safety reform, which the Swedish state adopted in 1997.

Sweden currently has some of the world’s safest roads, with the low traffic accident fatality rate of 3 out of 100,000 annual death resulting from accidents on the road. In Qatar on the other hand, 7.4 out of 100,000 deaths were a result of road accidents in 2015.

In addition to consulting on driver education and police enforcement, the firm will help design new roads, as well as upgrading existing roads to include safety features.

This is not the first initiative the state has taken to improve Qatar road safety standards. Up to 46 high-tech speed radars were recently installed on roads across the country to control speed limits by recording and fining speeding drivers, and 15 large LED screens are currently being installed on roads in key areas to provide drivers with real-time traffic information.
