The money will go assist in the aftermath of deadly Hurricane Matthew that hit Haiti last week. It destroyed much of the island-nation’s infrastructure and killed over a thousand people.

This is not the first time in recent history that the people of Haiti suffer from natural disasters. In January 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 7 destroyed much of the country as it was accompanied by more than 52 aftershocks. It was estimated that some 3 million people were affected, and death tolls between 100,000 and 160,000.

After Hurricane Matthew, ripped through Grand Anse, over 66,000 houses were destroyed, and over 20,000 houses were badly damaged, according to Unicef. The government has issued a state of emergency, and believe that at least 350,000 people are in need of urgent assistance.Haiti-after-Hurricane-Matthew-Logan-Abassi-via-European-Pressphoto-Agency.jpg

The government is also worried about a larger spread of the cholera outbreak which has been haunting the country since 2010, when the disease was introduced into the country’s biggest river from a UN base. It has at least killed some 10,000 people, and affected about 800,000 others.

Government officials estimate that at least 350,000 people needed assistance, and concern was growing over an increase in cholera cases following widespread flooding unleashed by the deadly storm.
