Netflix Are Looking For Their First Oscar

Do Netflix have their eyes on an Academy Award? Well, it seems that way.

The American online video on demand service provider, Netflix, has announced of plans to start showing their exclusive films in cinemas the same day they are released on their online streaming service. The service started film and television production in 2013, and has since become known for several high rated Netflix original TV series, documentaries and movies, only available online and through subscription.

They have released 10 Neflix Originals films through the high-end iPic cinema chain so far. Mascots and the Siege of Jadotville starring Jamie Dornan where the first two to be shown on the iPics’ silver screens, most of which are located in New York and Los Angeles.

The company had ventured into theatrical releases before with the highly-acclaimed Beasts of No Nation, starring Idris Elba. However, even though the movie became a high rated success, they only generated about $90,000 in ticket sales.

While it is still not certain, but several claims have been made that suggests that the company has their eyes on an Academy Award. To be eligible for an Oscar, a movie needs to be shown at least for a week in theaters in New York and Los Angeles.

Neflix is not new to major ventures. They have a deal with Marvel for several TV series circulating around the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in 2014 they announced a four-movie deal with Adam Sandler and Happy Madison Productions. The deal gave birth to movies like The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over.
