The long awaited Evergreen Organics, Qatar’s first and only, as far as we know, fully vegan restaurant opened at Qanat Quartier on the Pearl in Doha last week. The restaurant is already a success, offering a wide array of freshly prepared plant-based foods, cleansing juices and a vegan products.

Even though it can be hard for some people to imagine a yummy vegan burger, or a cheesecake without dairy, but be sure that they will do it, and it will taste delicious.

The widely shared misconception about veganism is that people go vegan because they feel that killing animals for food is wrong, but that is not even the half of it. Even though most vegans are animal rights supporters, that is not the only, or even the first reason to go vegan for many. Veganism is more about having a health and holistic lifestyle and nurturing your own body before anything else.

When you follow a strictly vegan diet, you cut out many sources of saturated fats which are usually found in meat and dairy products. Saturated fats harm your cardiovascular health, and are linked to heart disease and strokes.

Some people believe that to have a good muscle tone and be strong, you need to follow a high protein diet. But what they don’t know, is that meat is not the healthy way to get your protein. Red meat contains a lot of protein, and most times in dangerous amounts. But beans, nuts peas and lentils are a great source of protein, and their high consistency in hydrocarbons will help you keep your muscle mass.

The rest goes without mentioning. We all know about the importance of the fibers, vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables. But few know the dangers of red meat and dairy products.

According to a study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, including red meat in your diet increases the risks of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, strokes and certain cancers.

Things might not seem so bad for you now, but don’t you tell yourself that you will not be that helpless old person with countless health issues? Well, now is the time to make that first step. Throw out the steak and bring in the tofu.
