Islam’s holiest of sites, Mecca will soon have the world’s largest hotel, Abraj Kudai.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is keen on providing the best accommodation to the tens of millions of visitors to Islam’s holiest site, the city of Mecca. The city which is revered for being the home of Al Masjid Al Haram and Al Kaaba, will soon be the home city to the world’s largest hotel, Abraj Kudai.

Scheduled to open in 2017, Abraj Kudai will have 10,000 bedrooms, 70 restaurants as well as 5 rooftop helipads to make visits more comfortable for pilgrims. The hotel is a ring of 12 towers, the highest of which is 45 stories high. 10 of the 12 towers will offer four star services, while the two remaining tower will provide the luxury of five star service for special clientele, according to Arabian Business. Costing around 3.5 billion US dollars, Abraj Kudai will include a wing of 10 stories exclusive to the accommodation of the Saudi Royal Family.

The 1.4 million square meter hotel is not the only mega structure being developed in Mecca at the moment.

The Jabal Omar complex currently in development, is a compound of residential towers in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca. The highest of the residential towers will stand 150 meters high, while two Jabal Omar hotel towers will stand at 240 meters.

Over two million Muslims visit the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca for the annual pilgrimage. Otherwise known as Hajj, the mandatory pilgrimage which is a religious duty to every Muslim should be performed at least once in a lifetime, provided they are physically fit and financially capable. Another holy pilgrimage of lesser importance, the Umra has brought in over 14 million visitors to the city in one single month.
