Say No To Plastic: Qatar’s Latest Eco-friendly Campaign

With the support of the Qatari Ministry of Environment, Global Green Corporation has launched a campaign against the use of plastic carry bags in Qatar, and encouraging the usage of eco-friendly alternatives.

The campaign, entitled ‘Go Green Qatar – Say No to Plastic’, was launched over the weekend at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, right after the Qatari celebration of National Environment Day.

This is good news for Qatar since it is the only country in the GCC and maybe in the region that has put environment issues as a priority. This is also a great imitative since the country has one of the world’s highest rates of waste production per capita.

The large-scale campaign will put its efforts into providing 150,000 eco-friendly compostable and reusable grocery bags made of cornstarch, which decomposes completely after 4 months in compost, water or soil, without leaving any harmful chemical traces.

On the other hand, the usual plastic grocery bags take hundreds of years to degrade and since they fly away easily, they end up regularly on seashores and are among the top 10 pieces of trash collected on beaches globally. Moreover, they are a threat to the marine ecosystem, especially jellyfish and sea turtles that mistake them for food.

Global Green Corporation will take their message to popular venues like Katara Cultural Village, Villagio, City Center malls, and several locations around the Pearl Qatar. It will also visit schools, colleges and multinational companies to spread awareness about the danger of plastic bags on nature and the environment.
