On Annie Leibovitz’s Continuous Celebration Of Women

Annie Leibovitz has recently began exhibiting her new commissioned portraits falling under the series “Women” which she began over fifteen years ago.
The traveling exhibition began in London last month and will be displayed over the next 12 months in 10 more cities: Tokyo, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico, Istanbul, Frankfurt, New York and Zurich.
The new exhibition features portraits of outstanding yet diverse women like Misty Copland, Amy Schumer and Adele, and is the continuing of an ongoing and unfinished series because, according to the photographer herself, it mirrors “the continued evolution of women in society”.

In the upcoming months, the famous photographer will also be adding shots of subjects like the activist Malala Yousafzai and artist Marina Abramovic that are yet to be photographed.
As usual, the portraits are breathtaking in their simplicity and intimacy, that only a talented photographer like Leibovitz can perfectly capture. It is also nice to see how the series has evolved over the years in parallel with the evolution of women in society, becoming more varied as diversity in culture came to be more prevalent.
For those who don’t know her, Annie Leibovitz is the most famous photographer in the world of Entertainment, but has also taken the portraits of wide-ranging subjects from Queen Elizabeth II to Taylor Swift and Caitlyn Jenner.
She started out as a photographer for the Rolling Stone magazine and was even the last person to take the photograph of John Lennon on the day he was murdered.
Her ability to capture something unique in all of her subjects has helped her become the most talented photographer of her time and Hollywood’s most valued photographer.
