What to read

A Close Look At Bukowski

When I first decided that writing is what I wanted to do with my life, I owed it to the very inspiration of an individual that described exactly what my soul felt about writing. A great writer can be identified not only through harmony of ideas, coherence, and thought, what differentiates a good writer from a great one is the writer’s ability to give the reader a passage they feel they could have written themselves. Perspective is the mother of influence when it comes to reading, and writing.

To me, the greatest writer that has given me utmost inspiration, and who I believe writes for the self rather than for the reader, is the brilliant Charles Bukowski.

Bukowski writes for his own, however his raw edge, and unpolished creative genius, has resulted in my favorite novels of all time. However controversial some reviewers claim Bukoski’s writing is. I believe his writing is so realistic, with raw and musical descriptions, playing with words and letters, bringing beautiful meaning in manners only him could have thought, and expressed.

Henry Charles Bukowski, was originally nee Henrich Karl Bukowski, he is of German origins, and was raised in Los Angeles, Californic. Bukowski’s writing is influenced by social, and economic norms, and the situations he went through along his childhood. Eventually Bukowski grew to publish more than sixty books.

Charles’s first poetry book was published in 1959, he went on to thrive on the success of his raw unpolished writing.

Many of his books are considered autobiographical; he created a character by the name of Henri Chinaski, or Hank, Chinaski represents Bukowski’s very self.

Of Bukowski’s most notable and timeless works is the book Women, Ham on Rye, Pulp, Post Office, Factorum, and so many more.

Today, I will leave you with a gorgeous quote from Bukowski’s factorum :

“If you’re going to try go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start. This could mean losing, girlfriends, wives, relatives, and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery—isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you’re going to try go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the Gods and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”- Charles Bukowski, Factorum
