The United Arab Emirates have displayed a great deal of modern development, when it comes to their grandiose and state of the art architecture, contracting, as well as through their various macro scale projects. Creating one of the world’s most grandiose cities is not the only achievement on the hands of the UAE. The cities of the emirates are now delving into environment friendly power supply. The United Arab Emirates has announced the launch of a 100-megawatt solar plant providing power to 20,000 residences. This initiative will displace 175,000 tons of CO2 yearly. The project will be covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers of desert, and that is the equivalent of 250 football fields! Massive! The project named Shams 1 is a leap in the ideal direction for Abu Dhabi, properly manifesting the uses of renewable energy into sustainable, affordable, and environmentally friendly initiatives.

Some of the most fascinating things about this plant is that it will be able to displace 175,000 tons of CO2 each year! By doing so Shams 1 would be doing the equivalent of planting 1.5 million trees, and taking 15,000 cars off the road! That is huge, and it is an effort we hope to see all around the world. All of the planet’s resources are important, but renewable energy really is one of the basic pillars of a healthier, more sustainable life. This project is a step forward towards a healthier happier environment in the gulf.

Some of the many achievements that this project has so far seen are:

  • The world’s largest financing transaction for a solar power project (US$600 million).
  • 11,000,000 man-hours without major incident.
  • Shams 1 the largest solar project in the world.
  • Project Finance magazine awarded it “Middle East Renewable Energy Deal of the Year 2010”.
  • Registered on September 8, 2009 at the United Nations as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project eligible for carbon credits.

This initiative is groundbreaking we truly would love to see the entire world at large beginning to implement such projects, as they are really one of the few things able to sustain the environment on the long run.
